Five young adults with neuromuscular and neurodisabilities have come together with Braw Talent and Scottish actress and comedian Karen Dunbar to write, record and film their own rap song.
The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice Young Adult Service offers creative activities in partnership with a local company, Braw Talent for young adults at the hospice.
The five inspiring young adults Azeem, Cole, AJ, Sean and Oliva were joined at the hospice by Karen Dunbar who encouraged and supported the young adults to explore and demonstrate their talents in composing music and filming.
The creativity of the young adults was showcased at an event, Crazy Young Magic, on Friday 27 October at the Village Hotel where the film was premiered for the first time.
Karen Dunbar who attended on the day to present certificates to the young adults, commented: “These young people are just simply fantastic. We’ve just made a fantastic piece of work. I knew it would be good, I knew there would be a lot of creativity we could tap into there. But to actually get what we got and then to get the performance levels, I’m blown away with it.”
Lydia Everitt from Braw Talent said: “This was our first time working with young people who have such complex health needs and we worked closely with the staff at the hospice to make sure the workshops were accessible and tailored to all the participants.
“Throughout this project we have watched these young people grow in confidence and embrace newfound skills, breaking through stereotypes, and harnessing their creative potential. The impact on these individuals was evident, and we have seen their enthusiasm and self-assurance flourish.”
Sean O’Hagan, one of the young adults involved, said: “I wasn’t certain what to expect to start with. I just wanted to come and see what it was like. It was interesting, something I hadn’t done before. It was good.
“I’m quite proud of what I've done, because there was a lot more to it than I thought there was going to be.”
Lynsay Bain, Young Adult Service Lead, commented: “The Young Adult Service was delighted to work in partnership with Braw Talent and Karen Dunbar to offer young adults the opportunity to access further learning opportunities in a safe, accessible environment.
“The Young Adult Service was excited to organise the Crazy Young Magic Celebration in a co production approach with the young adults.
“We have watched our young adult excel in their learning. We are excited to offer the young adults the opportunity to showcase their wonderful achievements in learning new skills. We look forward to offering more young adults the opportunity in the future.”
The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice will continue to support young adults with many different conditions for example, neurological neurodisability, profound learning disabilities with complex health care needs, muscular dystrophy, and spinal muscular atrophy.
