Key facts about the hospice and our services


The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice provides person-centred and family focused care and support to 1200 new patients and families living with a life-limiting or terminal illness every year.

The hospice serves a population of approximately 316,000, from across Glasgow and East Renfrewshire.

Our services are provided by a team of about 170 hospice employees, and 25-30 bank staff.

Those services include day services for outpatients, an inpatient ward with 16 beds, a team of community nurse specialists, pain and symptom control clinics, education for healthcare professionals, providing palliative care team support at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, support services for GPs, nurses and hospital staff.

We also offer complementary therapies, a creative arts service, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, family support, bereavement counselling and a children’s bereavement service.

Our staff are supported by more than 800 enthusiastic volunteers.

We help people with a range of terminal and life-limiting conditions. We ensure compassionate care is co-produced with patients and families, and only after careful discussion choose the most appropriate way to look after patients.

The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice provides care free of charge 24 hours, seven days, with support seven days within the community.

The cost of looking after patients, their carers, and their families, is £5million a year, with £2million coming from the National Health Service. So that we can keep our doors open, and look after those who need our support, our hospice fundraising and events team must raise the remaining £3million shortfall.

Our new home gives us the flexibility to develop and improve services for our patients and families, and allow us to look after young patients aged from 16 years old. That is why ongoing support is vital as we look to the future and extend our care to many more patients and families who need our help every day.

PPWH is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 20 July 1983 and is a Registered Scottish Charity. It is established under its Memorandum of Association which lays out the objects and powers of the company and is governed by its Articles of Association which set out the legal and organisational procedures to which its administration must adhere.

The hospice has a clear reporting structure where senior staff members with defined responsibilities report to the Chief Executive who in turn reports to the Board of Directors. Day to day operational responsibility is delegated to the Chief Executive and the Hospice management team.

The hospice is authorised by Health Improvement Scotland (HIS) to provide Care Services. It is also recognised as a specialist palliative care provider by NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (formerly the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland) and by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Inspection visits each year ensure that the care provided is in line with the published regulations. 

Our new hospice

  • In 2012 we launched our Brick by Brick campaign to build a purpose-built hospice.
  • Glasgow City Council gifted the site in Bellahouston Park to the hospice and work began in September 2016.
  • The cost of our revolutionary new building was £21 million.
  • We opened the new hospice in Bellahouston Park in October 2018. Patients moved into the hospice in November 2018.
  • Our new hospice allows us to provide palliative care for young people, as well as our adult patients.
  • It is the first hospice in the UK to follow the Sengetun model of care.
