Why volunteer?
Volunteers are vital to the holistic care we give to patients with a progressive, life-threatening illness and to those who care for them. Few of us have escaped the heartbreak of cancer among our family or friends, and people often tell us that volunteering is a way of giving something back. Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people, gain experience and, most importantly, to help our patients make the most of each day!
Volunteers are one of the Hospice's greatest resources. In a typical week volunteers in the Hospice itself will put in some 420 hours of effort - and that doesn't count those working in our charity shops or fundraising. If you take them into account, the figure will rise to well over 1,000 hours.
You can benefit too! In return for your time, the Hospice offers:
- training for the role you are placed in
- the opportunity to gain experience in various aspects of our work
- authorised travel expenses
- the right to request a personal reference
- invitations to social events.
