Hospice support for carers

Our staff support carers in many informal ways - often just by inviting you to have a cup of tea when you're in the Hospice.  We are 'active listeners' and we do understand how difficult your role is.

If you are caring for a patient at home, part of your Laurieston Nurse's role is to assess how you are coping with what amounts to an around-the-clock shift. You may need practical advice - for example, who to speak to for access to social benefits or special equipment.  She can also help you link up with other agencies that provide carer support.

You may also need to talk out complex, often conflicting emotions. Caring at home can be about loneliness and isolation and, for many, grieving starts even before the death of their loved one.  The relationship you develop with the Hospice now will help to see you through.

Carers Group
Recognising that caring for a relative or friends can be difficult and stressful as well as rewarding, we believe that it is important to offer you the opportunity to meet together with other carers and share your experiences. That way you can support each other and perhaps learn about some of the practical ways in which you can help care for your loved one.

If you would like to discuss your experiences as a carer or if you want more information on how the Hospice may be able to help you meet your own needs, you may be interested in coming to our carers group meetings.

For further information about how you can become involved in one of our carers groups, you can ask your Laurieston nurse, or any of the nurses in the Hospice. Alternatively, email Rhona Baillie at rhona.baillie@ppwh.org.uk
You can obtain the Caring for Carers information pack at www.helpthehospices.org.uk.
