The Laurieston Nurses
The focus of palliative care has shifted over the years from ward-based to community-based care. As a result, many of our patients may never need to come into the Hospice. Instead, our team of six specialist nurses will take Hospice services out to them and their carers.
As highly-trained clinical nurse specialists in palliative care, Laurieston Nurses take symptom control and psychological support directly into your home, enabling you to stay in the familiar surroundings where most people prefer to be.
It is important to understand that Laurieston Nurses are not "hands-on" nurses. We are here to assess how you are doing and advise the primary care team on how to optimise your comfort and well-being.
We also have time - that most valuable commodity - to spend with you and to support your carers as well, making sure they are not taking on too much.
Each nurse is responsible for around 30 patients, at varying stages of illness. Initially you may only need a phone call or brief visit while later you might require longer or more frequent contact.
Our nurses are part of the multi-professional Laurieston Palliative Care Team, which includes a consultant and an associate specialist in palliative care, supported by the chaplain, two social workers, a physiotherapist and a community pharmacist.
