Arts in palliative care

Art in the Hospice

Since 2003 the Hospice art project has given hundreds of patients and their carers a relaxing pastime that is also hugely therapeutic.

As part of Day Services, we offer both art and creative writing in workshops tailored to individual needs and interests. Art sessions include drawing, painting, printmaking, digital imaging and photography, sculpture, textiles, bookbinding and papermaking. Writing ranges from autobiography to fiction to poetry.

Most participants have little or no past experience  - our two resident artists offer as much or as little technical advice as they want.

For some it's a new means of self-expression that overcomes the limitations of illness.  Others enjoy focusing on something besides their health.  Many want to leave mementoes for their loved ones.  And for all, just when they thought their accomplishments were behind them, there's the sheer joy of creating.

'The Pattern of a Bird'
