Education and training

As part of our strategic review our aim is to ensure there is a comprehensive education and training programme for all our staff and volunteers, giving the opportunity for development for all staff. We have a well resourced training room and library. Staff can attend monthly clinical continuous professional development sessions and are supported to undertake further study.

We also have a commitment to provide educational programmes for other professionals within the Greater Glasgow and Clyde environment and we are working towards recognition as a centre of excellence in this field.

In the hospice

We believe that our workforce needs to be at the cutting edge of palliative care. For staff employed by the hospice there are many opportunities to continue their professional development, from a robust mentorship programme to support in their broader studies. Everyone has responsibility for their own learning - but we provide many opportunities and support to make this achievable. We support secondments to other clinical areas and also within the hospice, and attendance at conferences and courses is encouraged.

Our commitment to lifelong learning extends to non-clinical staff and volunteers, who receive job-specific training as well as personal development in areas such as communication skills.

Beyond the hospice

As a specialist palliative care unit we are committed to sharing our expertise with other healthcare professionals.  Among current activities are:

-  A programme of 8 study days for healthcare workers across central Scotland, suitable for health care assistants, allied health professionals and nurses.
-  Providing palliative care awareness training for social work department staff.
-  Facilitating the  degree level palliative care module at Glasgow Caledonian University
-  Teaching on the MSc at the University of Glasgow
-  Coordinating the Palliative care and symptom management degree/ diploma modules running at the Southern General Hospital
-  Working with palliative care practice development teams to develop education across all care settings.
-  Facilitating practice development placements for all professions.
-  Supporting medical student education.
