What we don't do
Most of our patients have advanced cancer. We can and do provide palliative care for individuals who are referred to us with other non-malignant progressive illnesses.
However, hospice care is dynamic and our ward is not designed to be a long stay unit.
Hospice care is not an automatic consequence of a terminal diagnosis.
When not to refer:
- when patients are not in agreement with the referral
- symptoms are well controlled
- physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs are being met by present support networks
- discharge is well supported by others and meets current needs.
