Glasgow’s Mile-a-thon!
10 Jun 2010

13,000 children from schools across the city have put some serious energy into raising nearly £25,000 for the Hospice this spring and summer by running a marathon, one mile at a time!
The event, organised by Education Services Glasgow City Council was created to mark the 2,500th anniversary of the marathon. According to legend, in 490BC a Greek soldier called Pheidippides ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon. This story later gave birth to the modern marathon race of 26 miles and 385 yards.
The City of Glasgow chose to celebrate this unique anniversary with a city-wide school event to encourage the city's young people to participate in sport and physical activity. The event challenged pupils to complete the full marathon distance, by running or walking the distance in small bite-size chunks, for example one mile at a time.
The conclusion of the event was a Final Fun Day at Hampden Park, where around 100 children representing participating schools completed their marathon by running a lap of the track at the National Stadium.
Many thanks to Glasgow's Mile-a-thon event partners: Education Services Glasgow City Council, the National Stadium Sports Medicine Centre at Hampden, the Association of International Marathons & Distance Races (AIMS) and PMPR Excellence PR & Sports Promotion.
